A strike has been embarked on by staffs of the National Identity Management Commission leaving applicants outside their premises. Ajahcity.com.ng was at a registration centre at Eti-Osa Local Government on Thursday morning and gathered that applicants who were there as early as 6 am were told to return to their houses.

The notice of strike was signed by the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC branch, Lucky Michael, and its Secretary, Odia Victor.

It read in part, “Consequent upon the just concluded congress of the above mentioned association that took place on January 6, 2020, the unit executive directs all members of grade level 12 and below in the head office and state offices to report to their respective duty posts tomorrow January 7, 2020 and do nothing.

“All members at the local government offices and special centres are advised to stay away from their various centres as task force and implementation committees would be on parade to ensure total compliance to the directive.”

A statement released at the end of the congress meeting of the ACCSN, NIMC branch, noted that the strike became necessary due to the exposure of staff to COVID-19 risks, lack of personal protective equipment, irregularities in promotion and poor funding.

They also asked to be paid overtime and given enough tools to work with.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed more than 300 operatives and special marshals to improve safety on Ajah roads as the new year proceeds. The PRO of Ibeju FRSC, Mr Suleiman Khalid, made this disclosure to Ajahcity.com.ng on Wednesday. Khalid said that the deployment was to ensure the safety of motorists. He said that the command made available no fewer than 7 patrol vehicles, two bikes and four tow trucks for patrol.

"There are 24-hours-help, with the situation room opened to attend to emergency requests. Members of the public are implored to cooperate with the command by adhering to all traffic rules and obeying operatives. Motorists should promptly give information on road crashes for necessary attention, " Khalid said.

He said that the command was collaborating with some construction companies in making more corridors available. Khalid urged motorists to exercise patience, avoid speeding, and observe all COVID-19 prevention protocols to be safe.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)Lekki Command, has warned its officers against collecting bribes from motorists, vowing that anyone found wanting would be dealt with decisively.

The Unit Commander, Wasiu Adetunmobi, gave the warning during an interview with ajahcity.com.ng on Wednesday.

He also warned motorists not to give bribe to any officer, urging them to report anyone who demanded money from them to the office.

Adetunmobi urged drivers to obey traffic regulations to enhance safety on the roads, especially with the increased vehicular movement as the yuletide season gradually comes to an end.

According to him, the command is planning to have motor parks rallies after some modalities are put in place.

He described road safety as everyone’s business, which must not be left in the hands of the commission alone.

“Motorists and other road users are advised to take road traffic tips seriously as they travel,” Adetunmobi said.

The unit commander urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles were in good driving conditions before embarking on journeys.

The holidays may have come and gone but the aura surrounding the new year celebrations still lingers on.

The streets of Ajah that is known for its high level of traffic congestion especially on week days is experiencing mild traffic; this is attributed to the fact that most private business owners are yet to return from their travels and the closure of schools which contributes significantly to the heavy traffic usually experienced.

Nevertheless, certain institutions such as banks and some others in the public sector have resumed work for the new year fully.

Taking a tour in the evenings to eateries and relaxation points, sources told ajahcity.com.ng that there's been increased patronage as a result of the celebrations, customers are seen in their numbers having a nice time with friends and families with various levels of regard for the COVID-19 safety guidelines.

The beaches and parks around Ajah has also had it's fair share of the influx of people, as Lagosians use this season to visit tourist sites and to make merry with their loved ones.

Ajahcity.com.ng observed that this trend may continue into the second week of the year before life returns to normalcy.

The Lagos State Government has announced that all public and private schools below tertiary school level in the State are to remain closed indefinitely due to the outbreak of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

This disclosure is contained in a statement which was issued by the Head of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr Kayode Abayomi, late on Sunday, January 3, 2020.

Abayomi in the statement noted that the recent directive makes it mandatory that all schools earlier scheduled to resume on January 4, 2021, must remain closed until a new resumption date is announced.

The statement from Abayomi, partly reads, “The Lagos State Government has announced that all public and private schools below the tertiary level in Lagos State remain closed indefinitely due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

While informing that a new date will be communicated in due course, Abayomi urged parents and students to ensure strict adherence to guidelines issued by the government to prevent the spread of Covid-19 such as the wearing of face masks, physical distancing, washing of hands under running water and use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers.

It can be recalled that the Lagos State Government, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, about 2 weeks ago, directed the indefinite shutdown of all public and private schools, as part of the state’s public health directives to prepare the state for the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

While speaking with ajahcity.com.ng, sources at Lagos State Model College, Badore, said that sanitary systems are being reviewed and installed ‘all over again’, which is reminiscent of resumption of schools in September 2020.

Furthermore, the source revealed that strict adherence to safety protocols will be adhered to this time to curb the spread of the virus amidst staff and students.
